Farm Update – Spring
What a wet Spring we’ve had!
The ground has been extremely saturated this year, meaning we weren’t able to begin sowing until the middle of April. Thankfully the rain cleared up for a few days and we managed to get going, and not a week later the first barley shoots started to emerge.
It's a funny thought that one day these tiny stems will turn from green to gold and eventually become our single malt whisky. For now though, we'll leave them to do their thing.
Our Second Malt Floor Trial
In other barley news, we've spent the past few weeks conducting our second malt floor trials at the distillery.
We’ve made some improvements since last year’s trials and decided to malt two batches this year instead of one.
It's been a lot of hard work, as the malt must be turned by hand every few hours using rakes, but we've learned a lot and have got the back muscles to prove it!
We also had a few volunteers who kindly offered to help turn the malt. A big thank you to the Pot Still team, Ross Laird and Ben Campbell for their enthusiasm and hard work.
